Joy
These paintings, from my exhibit Joy!, are truly an image diary of spontaneous expression
and are inspired by the wild abandon found in children's art. Many of the greatest
artists of the 20th century were avid collectors of children's art, using it as a stimulus for their own work.
Kids have a magical ability to visually communicate instinctive truth and emotion. Here I approached
the paintings in a playful manner, applying paint with my fingers in a primitive free style. In
attempting to reenter my child-mind, I threw off self-consciousness and was able to express the depths
of my true soul. In so doing, I discovered joy.
